In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario can collect Coins and items from floating blocks - all throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. There are 7 distinctive types of blocks in the game:

  • ? Block: The basic yellow one, can be striken at any time by anyone.
  • M Block: Same function as the ? Block, but is red in color with red M in the white circle, indicating that only Mario can strike it.
  • L Block: Same function as the ? Block, but is green in color with green L in the white circle, indicating that only Luigi can strike it.
  • P Block: Same function as the ? Block, but is orange in color with orange P in the white circle, indicating that only Paper Mario can strike it.
  • Bros. Block: Two colored ? Block (three colored after Paper Mario joins). When struck by either Mario or Luigi, it will move in the direction of the arrow and change to the opposite brother's color and initial. When struck by that brother, it will move back to where it was and change again. Each time a Bros. Block is struck, the brothers will receive a coin. After Paper Mario joins, the block changes colors from two to three, indicating that Paper Mario can also use it. After striking it, Mario and Paper Mario stand on the edges, while Luigi goes in the middle. Then it functions as normal.
  • Special ? Block: Rectangual ? Block. After the initial ? Block has been struck, it shows a pattern of 5 M and L Blocks, then they turn to 5 ? Blocks and must be struck in the same pattern to get the 10-Coin hidden in the initial ? Block. After Paper Mario joins, the pattern will also include P Blocks.
  • Rally Block: The Rally Block appears as a purple block with a two-sided arrow on it. If hit, the trio stands at different points. Mario must hit the block to start the Rally Block. Either Mario, Luigi, or Paper Mario must jump to hit it as the block changes into an M Block, L Block, or a P Block. The block will accelerate from time to time, making timing harder. A score counter also appears on the bottom of the top screen. If the player surpasses the high score, the trio earns coins, but if they did not, the trio do not earn any coins. The score counter resets after Paper Mario joins, so in theory it is possible to get maximum coins from two Rally Blocks, since all blocks share the same counter.

There are a total of 454 Blocks to be found, but only 368 are counted in-game. This is due to game only counting ? Blocks, M Blocks, L Blocks and P Blocks in the main areas. This means that Bros. Blocks, Special ? Blocks and Rally Blocks in main areas, all blocks in unrevisitable areas (non-damaged Peach's Castle and Bowser's Castle) and all blocks in missions (mandatory tutorial mission in Peach's Castle at the start of the game (will be included in the Peach's Castle section) and Hunt for the Medallion) do not count to the block total. Also all missions besides the two mentioned do not have any blocks at all. For the sake of completion, all 454 blocks will be listed here and this page will show the locations of each one and how to get to them.
