Generic Little Mouser

I think it is pretty evident that Grifty is meant to be a Little Mouser based on his general appearance, particularly the bandanna around his eyes and the enlogated nose, but its not explicitly stated that he is a Little Mouser. I think it is fair to assume that he is, especially given his similarities to Moustafa, but since its not explicitly stated, I can understand why some may not want to classify him as such, though I cannot find any instances of this issue being previously debated. Whereas I generally oppose speculation when there is not a confirmed answer, I think its meant to be obvious that Grifty is a Little Mouser. To provide a similar example, is Waluigi ever explicitly confirmed by Nintendo to be a human, or can we just naturally assume that he is based on his appearance? More to the point on PM characters, Merluvlee, Merlow, Merlumina, etc. are all classified as Shaman despite not being explicitly identified as such; its self-evident. In terms of what makes the most sense for the wiki specifically, if someone remembers Grifty's appearance but not his name, it would be challenging to find him without clicking through all the TTYD characters. If they remember his appearance is like a Little Mouser, they could go the Little Mouser page (which redirects from Little Mouser) and find him referenced there in either Little Mousers category or the Little Mousers template.

The most obvious thing that separates Grifty from other Little Mousers is his height, though since he's wearing a trench coat, we don't know if he's actually that tall or if he's hiding something underneath the cloak that makes him appear taller. Also muddling the situation, the unique dialogue sounds added in the remake don't make Grifty's voice sound like other Little Mousers. He doesn't necessarily sound like anything else, which may support the belief that he is not a Little Mouser but instead some kind of other species, perhaps one related to Little Mousers. While I think there's an argument for Grifty to be considered a Little Mouser, TTYD also introduces several one-off species, like whatever Charlieton, Rip Cheato, and Wonky are (potentially all the same species, but a conversation for a different place). Grifty could simply another example of this. Nevertheless, I think his general similarities to Little Mousers and lack of similarities to anything else (other than a new, unknown species) gives enough cause to consider him a Little Mouser. Since its unlikely he'll ever appear again outside of TTYD given he's a lore expert of TTYD's world specifically, I doubt we'll ever have an official answer from Nintendo.

Nintendo101 (talk) Grifty and Little Mousers are clearly both rodents, but there are subtle proportional and physiological differences in Grifty that suggests, to me at least, he is not suppose to be viewed as a member of the same species. He looks taller (as if he has a torso separate from his head, unlike Little Mousers), a differently shaped snout, a visible mouth, different proportioned feet, and no tail. If Grifty was suppose to unambiguously be a Little Mouser, I do not think we would be seeing these physical discrepancies.

3. Hewer (talk) Not every mouse needs to be a Little Mouser, and this guy's eyes are the only thing that make him look like a Little Mouser besides also being a mouse. Let's not deliberately insert speculation into the wiki.
4. Arend (talk) From what we can see, Grifty is tall and has a visible mouth, things that Little Mousers typically aren't/don't have. Their nose also has a sheen while those of Little Mousers lack that. If Grifty were intended to be a Little Mouser, the designers would've probably use the same Little Mouser model as the other Squeeks in the game (to be fair though, we do have off-model Toad characters like Heff T. and Toodles); he does not, so it's likely that he's intended to be a different kind of rat, mouse, or other rodent. As for the black around his eyes, that could possibly be his face being shadowed by his cap's brim (not unlike how a Buzzy Beetle's shell shadows its face), and doesn't necessarily have to be the domino mask of a Little Mouser.

Just need to point out that the name "Squeek" is only used in the original game, the remake calls the species "Little Mousers" as they are called throughout the franchise. Nightwicked Bowser 17:50, June 8, 2024 (EDT)
